Girls Generation (I Got a Boy)

Girls Generation (I Got a Boy)
I Got a Boy is the fourth Korean studio album (sixth overall) by South Korean girl group Girls' Generation. It was released on January 1, 2013, by S. M. Entertainment. The album, which contains recordings dating back to 2008, is the first Korean album by the whole group after a fourteen-month hiatus after a sub-unit of members Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun released an EP in April 2012 and the group released their second Japanese album, Girls' Generation II: Girls & Peace. Member Seohyun explained the album strays away from the group's usual releases with the album being described as a "time machine" which explores the group's past and future.
The album was preceded by the pre-release single, "Dancing Queen", released on December 21, 2012. The title track, "I Got a Boy", was released digitally on January 1, 2013.

Background and development

In October 2011, the group made a Korean comeback with The Boys after a year away in Japan during which they released their debut Japanese album, Girls' Generation. "The Boys" went on to become the best selling non-repackaged album in the Gaon Chart era, selling over 420,000 copies by the start of 2012. After that, the group announced their first sub-unit group, TaeTiSeo which is made-up of members Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun, who released their debut EP Twinkle that April. The group then returned to Japan with a series of successful Japanese singles from their second Japanese album, Girls' Generation II: ~Girls & Peace~ (2012).
In the November 2012 issue of South Korean fashion magazine CeCi, Seohyun told the magazine that the group had been preparing for the album for some time, adding, "This album is really different from our usual ones. It’s like challenging a person’s limits. I’m looking forward to what the fans will think, and because it’s still a secret [amongst us]. The group had originally planned to make a Korean comeback during the months of October and November. However, plans were ultimately scrapped for the group to focus on Japanese promotions for the remainder of 2012. On November 16, 2012, it was revealed the group were to make a Korean comeback after fourteen months away from the industry. The following month, on December 11, 2012, a representative for SM Entertainment stated that the group were in the final stages of preparation for their fourth album, however, the release date was still undecided. On December 20, 2012, SM Entertainment posted a teaser image containing the words "2012. 12. 21 10 A.M." on their official Twitter.
